Growth Blueprint

Highlights

  • More than 140 articles published with an optimal informational-to-buying intent ratio
  • A decent backlink profile with links from sites like EssentiallySports and JohhnyHolland
  • Great traffic and revenue growth for a 1-year-old site

Setbacks

  • Traffic has experienced fluctuations over the past year
  • One page is attracting more than 21% of the traffic (ideally < 15%)
  • Revenue is too dependent on display ads earnings

Easy Wins

  • Enhance the affiliate revenue by incorporating additional affiliate links to educational content, creating new buying guides and actively seek out higher commission affiliates
  • Improve existing affiliate content by adding additional CTAs in a form of comparison tables (currently missing)
  • Outreach to similar golf sites; there is a lack of backlinks from golf-related sites

Takeaway

Over the past year, the owner has published more than 140 comprehensive articles that rank for over 8,000 keywords.

However, the traffic is heavily reliant on a single article, which accounts for over 25% of the traffic, and there is an abnormal proportion of direct traffic.

To optimize the site’s revenue potential, there are two main areas of focus: expanding affiliate opportunities and improving the quality of existing affiliate content.

The backlink profile is solid for a site of its age, but to compete with larger players in the niche, a more aggressive backlink-building strategy, including an active outreach campaign, will be necessary.

Valuation:

The website is priced at $44,694, representing a 39X multiple of the average monthly profit of $1,146 generated over the past 7 months.

This unusual valuation period was used due to the site’s relatively short age of less than a year.

Notable links: Kotaku.com, Atlas Obscura, New Hampshire Public Radio, PinballNews.com

Site History

This domain was used by a well-known pinball arcade that also sold and repaired pinball and arcade machines.

The 9,800-square-foot public arcade in New Hampshire was recommended by the Atlas Obscura travel guide and the business was closed in 2017.

Here’s what the site looked like:

pinball wizard arcade archive

Growth Blueprint

The history of this domain and brandable name provide a good opportunity to grow an affiliate site focused on retro home arcade products such as replica pinball and arcade machines.

Here’s what I would do:

  1. Relaunch the site with a focus on replica pinball and arcade machines that can be purchased for a home arcade
  2. Publish reviews and buying guides for pinball machines, arcade machines, and retro gaming devices that are sold on Amazon and Game Stop
  3. Publish articles answering questions about top brands and products related to retro arcade machines
  4. Publish articles about building a home arcade (e.g., best X for a home arcade)

Monetization would be primarily affiliate links to replica pinball machines, arcade machines, and other related products which can cost several hundred dollars. You can also add display ads for additional revenue although RPMs for video game topics tend to be low.

Growth Blueprint

Highlights

  • Diversified and sustainable sources of income
  • Traffic is well distributed between organic and social (Pinterest) traffic
  • Strong social media presence with 20,000 followers on Pinterest, 4,700 likes on Facebook page and 2,400 followers on Instagram
  • 5,100 email subscribers
  • Stable traffic during the last 12 months
  • 15 digital products (printable PDF tutorials)

Setbacks

  • The Etsy shop run by the seller is not included in the sale
  • The site operates in a micro niche (wire wrapping)
  • Weak backlink profile
  • Domain is not brandable

Easy Wins

  • Add more affiliate content, while the most of products in the niche are cheap, the competition is scarce
  • Create step-by-step Youtube tutorials. DIY videos are evergreen on the platform
  • Create your own digital course implementing existing digital products and DIY video tutorials
  • Improve backlink profile by outreaching to similar blogs in the niche
  • Weekly newsletter with tutorials, tips and DIY projects found on Pinterest and other DIY communities

Takeaway

The website in question is an interesting find on Flippa auctions. It is a 3.5-year-old site with 43 articles published in DIY jewelry micro niche. Additional assets include active social media accounts, decent sized mailing list, and 15 digital products

It requires a high workload, with the seller spending around 20 hours per week. Additionally, the site doesn’t have a meaningful backlink profile.

Despite these challenges, the website has growth potential. Many tasks could be relegated to VAs. With the proactive content strategy and active link-building, traffic and revenue could be increased.

I highly recommend starting a weekly newsletter in this space and selling advertisement spots. This would be lucrative.

Valuation:

This is an auction sale. At the moment (2/7/2023), there are 49 bids, with the highest at $5,600. With the monthly profit at $254, the current valuation is 22X. There is no reserve price. If you are able to snatch it for the price of up to 32X multiple ($8,128), this could be a great project for a successful website flip.

🚀 Off-Market Sites

The Website Flip runs a Facebook group where sellers can list sites for sale. Here is a selection of a few sites:

  1. $90/mo Off-Grid Niche Site: 3-year-old site earning $90 L6M average via Ezoic and Amazon. 70 articles published that were written by the owner. The asking price is $3,200.
