In Q2 2025, I won a featured snippet on a finance comparison page for a keyword with 2,400 monthly searches. Organic CTR dropped from 4.1% to 1.7%.
The snippet answered the question completely. Users got what they came for and did not click. In rank tracking software, this was a win. In revenue, it was a loss.
Every AEO agencies article published right now tells you that winning featured snippets is the goal. None of them mention that the wrong featured snippet can destroy the traffic you are trying to build. That is what the 6-month test across 3 of my online businesses was built to surface.
Six Agencies Mapped to What AEO Actually Delivers
If you are here for the agency list, it is below. The test data and the paradox behind it follow.
| Agency | Best For | AEO Approach | Starting Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vettted | Modular AEO/GEO work on a defined query set | Citation and answer optimization across AI and traditional search surfaces | Project-based |
| Animalz | B2B brands with complex-answer query libraries | Long-form content optimized for click-driving featured snippets | Custom |
| Marcel Digital | Full-scope AEO from technical schema to content | Featured snippets, FAQs, voice search, schema markup end to end | Custom |
| Yes Optimist | AEO tied to conversion outcomes, not visibility counts | AEO optimization reported against CTR and revenue, not snippet count | Custom |
| Online Optimism | B2B companies needing AEO and brand authority together | B2B-focused AEO for authority building and answer visibility | Custom |
| NP Digital | Enterprise brands needing AEO applied at scale | Full-stack AEO: voice search, snippets, PAA, schema at scale | Custom |
What AEO Is and How It Differs From GEO
The Definition and the Zero-Click Context
Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the practice of optimizing content to appear in direct answer surfaces: featured snippets, People Also Ask results, knowledge panels, voice search answers, and AI-generated answer blocks in standard Google results.
Featured snippets launched in 2016. That is the earliest technical form of AEO. The discipline is not new; it is newly labeled and newly sold by agencies. The category now covers voice assistants (Google Assistant, Siri, Alexa), People Also Ask sections, and Bing Copilot responses alongside the original featured snippet surface.
According to a 2024 SparkToro/Datos study, 58.5% of US Google searches end without a click. Users are getting their answers in the result. For operators whose revenue depends on that click, zero-click search is a structural business problem. AEO sits directly at that intersection.
AEO is related to but not the same as GEO (Generative Engine Optimization), which targets citation in AI-generated responses from ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Mode. AEO has the longer history and clearer technical framework.
When Featured Snippets Reduce Clicks
Not all featured snippets produce the same outcome. Whether AEO helps or hurts depends on the query type you are optimizing for.
Simple-answer queries (what is the current 30-year mortgage rate, what does term life insurance cover, what is the average cost of roof replacement) are queries where the complete answer fits in 40 to 60 words. Per Google’s featured snippet documentation, these are the queries the snippet format is designed to fully satisfy. Winning the snippet on a simple-answer query is an argument for why the user does not need to visit your page.
Complex-answer queries (how to choose between term and whole life insurance for a family with one income, what factors determine the right roofing material for a humid climate) require context, comparison, or multi-step guidance. The snippet shows enough to create click intent without satisfying the underlying question. Winning that snippet drives clicks.
According to Ahrefs’ 2025 CTR research, AI Overviews reduced CTR for position 1 by 34.5% in April 2025, worsening to 58% by December 2025. The mechanism is the same one that applies to simple-answer featured snippets: the answer surface eliminates the reason to click. Agencies that optimize for featured snippets generically, without classifying query type first, will produce that outcome and report the snippet count as success.
Warning: Any AEO agency reporting success by featured snippet count is measuring the wrong thing. Featured snippet appearances are a visibility metric. Organic CTR and revenue from those pages are the business metrics. For simple-answer queries, these two move in opposite directions. If they cannot explain that distinction, they will not measure the right outcomes after they start work.
How I Ran the Test Across 3 Online Businesses
The 3 Sites Used in the Test
The finance comparison site was the highest-risk test case. It is an affiliate-monetized site covering insurance, investment accounts, and personal loans. Finance queries have a high density of simple-answer content (rate comparisons, basic definitions, cost estimates) and high-value traffic where any CTR change hits revenue immediately. The business most exposed to the AEO paradox.
The home services local lead gen site tested a different question: whether AEO tactics built for informational content transfer to local commercial queries. Revenue comes from contractor referrals. Voice search has high relevance for local service intent, and knowledge panel optimization is a meaningful AEO lever for local businesses. The measurement challenge here turned out to be bigger than the optimization challenge.
The B2B information and tools site covering operations and productivity topics had the opposite profile from the finance site. High density of complex-answer queries, digital product monetization, and an audience using search to research before buying. AEO should work here if it works anywhere.
The Changes I Made Across All 3 Sites
The same core set of changes went to all three sites, applied to the top 20 pages by organic traffic. URL structure, existing backlinks, meta data, keyword targeting, and internal link structure were not touched.
- Classified all target queries by answer complexity before any optimization. This step came first. Simple-answer queries were identified and explicitly excluded from featured-snippet optimization.
- Added direct answer blocks to complex-answer query pages only. Not applied uniformly across all pages.
- Added FAQ schema with supporting data and expert attribution on complex-answer question sections, not applied to simple-answer pages.
- Implemented HowTo schema on process-oriented content relevant across the finance and B2B sites.
- Built consistent entity signals across all three businesses for knowledge panel development.
Changes went in during month 1. Measurement ran months 2 through 6, with an 8-week pre-change baseline established before any optimization started.
How I Measured the Results
Google Search Console tracked featured snippet appearances per page, organic CTR before and after for each optimized page, and impressions-to-clicks ratios. GA4 tracked goal completions: affiliate click-throughs for the finance site, call form submissions for the home services site, and email signups and product purchases for the B2B site.
For the home services business, LocalGlyph provided Map Pack visibility tracking, local knowledge panel monitoring, and AI Overview appearance tracking for local service queries. Manual voice search testing ran on Google Home and Apple Siri for 15 target local queries. For the broader AI visibility tools used alongside LocalGlyph, see our AI SEO tools roundup.
6 Months of AEO Results Across 3 Sites
Finance Comparison Site: The Paradox in Exact Numbers
7 featured snippets won across 7 pages over 6 months. CTR dropped on 5 of them, held flat on 1, increased on 1.
The 5 drops were all simple-answer queries: rate definitions, basic comparisons, cost estimates. The 1 increase was a complex-answer page covering multi-factor decision-making content. The flat page sat in a borderline category.
Net affiliate revenue impact on the 7 affected pages: negative. The specific page from the intro made it clearest. 2,400 monthly searches for that keyword. Snippet won. CTR dropped from 4.1% to 1.7%. The snippet showed the current rate range and a brief explanation. Users got the answer without visiting the page.
A finance comparison site with a high density of simple-answer queries and unconstrained featured snippet optimization will lose revenue. AEO agencies that skip query classification before optimizing will deliver this outcome reliably.
Local Home Services Site: Better Visibility, Harder Attribution
The knowledge panel appeared in Google Search for the brand name within 90 days of the entity signal work. PAA appearances increased for 8 of the 15 target local service queries. Local Business schema was implemented correctly across all service pages.
The measurement challenge was more significant than the optimization challenge. Google Analytics and GSC do not provide direct voice search traffic segmentation. Confirming which results were surfaced by voice assistants required manual testing: running the 15 target queries through Google Home and Siri repeatedly across the 6-month window.
Lead volume from the site increased during the period, but isolating the AEO contribution from other concurrent work was not possible. LocalGlyph‘s knowledge panel monitoring and AI Overview appearance tracking for local service queries gave the closest available proxy for measuring local AEO outcomes. For any local business operator: voice search is real, knowledge panel work is achievable, and honest reporting requires admitting that clean attribution is not yet available in standard analytics stacks.
B2B Site: Where AEO Actually Worked
11 featured snippets won on complex-answer queries. CTR increased on 9 of them. Held flat on 2.
The query classification step made the difference. Only pages targeting complex-answer queries received featured-snippet-ready optimization. Simple-answer sub-questions within the same topic areas were deliberately left unoptimized, and those pages did not win snippets.
GA4 product purchase data tracked higher conversion rates on pages where complex-query featured snippets were won. The snippet preview demonstrated expertise without satisfying the underlying question. PAA appearances across the B2B topic areas increased and produced consistent, if modest, click volume.
The Pattern Across All 3 Sites
Across all three businesses, whether AEO optimization drove traffic or killed it came down to one thing: the answer complexity of the target query. Not the quality of the optimization work. Not which agency did it.
Optimizing a simple-answer query for snippets produces zero-click outcomes. Optimizing a complex-answer query produces clicks. The classification step is not optional, and most AEO agencies do not have one.
Our keyword research tools guide covers how to build this classification step before any optimization begins.
Pages with thin topical coverage or weak authority signals will not hold a featured snippet position even if they briefly win it. Clean up thin content first. Our SEO content pruning service is set up specifically for this as a pre-AEO workstream, if you need someone to do it.
Pro Tip: Before hiring any AEO agency, run the 50-word test on your top 20 pages. For each page, ask: can the primary query be fully answered in 50 words in a way that satisfies the searcher? If yes, it is a simple-answer query. Avoid featured snippet optimization on those pages. If 50 words creates interest but does not satisfy, it is a complex-answer query and AEO optimization is appropriate. For portfolio operators tracking this across multiple online businesses, SEOAnalyticsDashboard.com consolidates featured snippet appearances, CTR changes, and revenue data across all sites into a single weekly view.
The 6 AEO Agencies I’d Consider After This Test
Each agency below is evaluated against what I learned from the 3-business AEO test, especially whether their methodology accounts for the AEO paradox. An agency treating all featured snippet wins as success metrics without tracking CTR and revenue impact will produce the finance site outcome, not the B2B site outcome.
1. Vettted

- Best for: Online business operators who have completed their own query classification and want a specialist to execute AEO optimization on the complex-answer query subset, without a full agency retainer
- Pricing: Project-based. See vettted.com for current rates.
Most operators reading this have already done the foundational keyword and content work. They know which queries they are targeting and roughly which ones are simple-answer versus complex. What they need is not an agency to build the strategy from scratch but a specialist to execute on work they have already scoped. That is the specific gap Vettted fills. It is a marketplace of AEO and GEO specialists with an extremely thorough vetting process. You commission specific deliverables from vetted specialists rather than signing a monthly retainer with a full-service agency.
The brief defines exactly what gets optimized and what stays untouched. If you have already classified your queries and know which ones are complex-answer, you can commission optimization for exactly that set and nothing else. That prevents the finance site error before it happens.
Honest limitation: You need to have completed the classification step yourself. Operators who want an agency to build the strategy and execute it without significant operator input need a different kind of arrangement.
2. Animalz

- Best for: B2B brands where informational content is the primary marketing channel and the audience uses search to research before purchase decisions
- Pricing: Custom. Monthly retainer-based. Contact for current rates.
Animalz is a content marketing agency known for high-quality B2B content with strong organic performance. Their AEO approach starts from content depth and expertise, which naturally positions their clients for complex-query featured snippets rather than simple-answer ones.
The B2B information site in the test produced the strongest results because the content was long-form and expert-driven before any AEO optimization started. Animalz builds exactly this for its clients. Their clients are less likely to encounter the AEO paradox because the content they produce tends toward complex-answer queries where snippets drive clicks.
Honest limitation: Primarily B2B. Consumer niches, local lead gen, and affiliate review content are outside their main focus. The methodology does not transfer cleanly to those formats.
3. Marcel Digital

- Best for: Online business operators who need AEO applied systematically across a full site, where both the technical and content layers need attention at the same time
- Pricing: Custom. Contact for current rates.
Marcel Digital has a dedicated AEO service line covering featured snippet optimization, FAQ schema implementation, voice search content development, People Also Ask targeting, and knowledge panel building.
The test confirmed something the full-scope model addresses directly: schema markup on its own produces nothing. AEO requires both the technical layer (schema, page structure, entity signals) and the content layer (answer depth, query classification, structured sections) working together. Agencies that treat these as separate work streams tend to deliver partial results.
Honest limitation: Full scope, and pricing to match. Operators who need only a specific AEO workstream, FAQ schema on complex-answer pages for example, may be paying for overhead beyond what they need.
4. Yes Optimist

- Best for: Operators who have been burned by AEO work that improved snippet appearances while failing to improve revenue, and want an agency whose reporting framework tracks the difference
- Pricing: Custom. Contact for current rates.
Yes Optimist positions its AEO work around growth outcomes and conversion metrics rather than visibility KPIs. Their reporting framework includes CTR and conversion tracking alongside featured snippet appearances.
That accountability structure is what the test showed was missing from most AEO engagements. If an agency reports on both snippet appearances and the CTR impact of those appearances, the paradox becomes visible in the data rather than hidden behind a success metric. An agency that cannot show you whether the snippets they won produced more or fewer clicks has not measured the outcome of their work.
Honest limitation: Fewer publicly documented case studies with specific before/after CTR and revenue data than Animalz or Marcel Digital. Verify their measurement process directly during the first conversation.
5. Online Optimism

- Best for: B2B companies where professional credibility and thought leadership are the primary content positioning, and where AEO is one component of a broader brand authority strategy
- Pricing: Custom. Contact for current rates.
The B2B information site produced the strongest test results because its content already had genuine authority signals before any AEO optimization began. Online Optimism builds AEO on top of a brand authority and content strategy framework. The test confirmed that sequence: authority signals came first, then AEO optimization.
Their B2B focus means their AEO work naturally weights toward complex-answer queries and thought leadership content. That is exactly where the test showed positive results.
Honest limitation: AEO is one component of a broader service offering. Operators who need deep specialist AEO work may find the focus depth less than a dedicated AEO-first agency.
6. NP Digital

- Best for: Established online businesses with large content libraries ($1M+ annual revenue from organic search) where AEO needs to be applied systematically across a full domain, not a targeted page set
- Pricing: Custom. Enterprise-focused. Contact for a quote.
NP Digital is a large full-service digital marketing agency with AEO capabilities integrated across SEO, content, and technical service lines. The scale is suited to enterprise operations with large content libraries where AEO optimization runs across thousands of pages rather than targeted query subsets.
The 50-word classification test that works for a 20-page audit needs to become an automated classification system at that scale. NP Digital’s data-driven approach to content classification has the infrastructure to do this systematically, which smaller agencies cannot replicate at the same volume.
Honest limitation: Not the right fit for smaller online businesses or single-operator portfolios. Better for scaling an already-validated AEO approach than testing one for the first time.
How to Vet an AEO Agency Before Hiring
These apply to any agency not on the list above. They surface whether an agency understands the AEO paradox before you hand them access to your pages.
How do you classify queries by answer complexity before deciding which pages to optimize for featured snippets?
The correct answer describes a classification step that runs before any optimization begins, separating simple-answer queries from complex-answer ones.
Red flag: an agency that goes straight to optimization without this step will produce zero-click outcomes on simple-answer queries and report the snippet count as a win.
Do you report on organic CTR change per page alongside featured snippet appearances?
Snippet appearances without CTR tracking is half the data. The 6-month test found CTR dropped on 5 of the 7 pages that won snippets in the finance business. An agency that only counts appearances missed the actual outcome on every one of those pages.
Red flag: if the agency’s standard reporting does not include per-page CTR movement, they are not measuring what matters.
What is your approach to pages where winning a featured snippet is likely to reduce organic clicks?
A legitimate AEO agency has a framework for avoiding featured snippet optimization on simple-answer queries where zero-click outcomes are predictable.
Red flag: an agency without a specific answer does not know the AEO paradox exists.
What technical prerequisites do you audit before beginning AEO optimization?
Schema markup on thin content produces no results. The technical and content layers both need to be in order before AEO optimization can build on them.
Red flag: starting optimization without a technical audit is skipping the foundation. If you want a checklist for what that audit covers, our website SEO audit tool breakdown is the right starting point.
Can you show me a case where a client’s featured snippet win correlated with a revenue increase, not just a visibility increase?
Any agency that has done serious AEO work should have at least one client example tracked through to CTR and revenue, not just snippet count.
Red flag: they cannot produce this.
What This AEO Test Found
AEO produced results on complex-answer queries and cost revenue on simple-answer ones. That is what the test came down to, and it is the reason Vettted sits at the top of this list. The modular brief structure forces query classification upfront. You define the scope, which means simple-answer pages are excluded by default.
Yes Optimist is ranked second because their reporting framework tracks CTR and revenue alongside snippet appearances. That is the exact accountability structure the test showed was missing from most AEO engagements. Winning snippets that reduce clicks is not a result worth paying for.
Animalz ranks third because their B2B content model naturally orients toward complex-answer queries. Their clients are less likely to hit the finance site problem because the content type does not lend itself to simple-answer snippet optimization in the first place.
Run the 50-word test on your top 20 pages before briefing any agency. If the primary query can be fully answered in 50 words, that page is off-limits for snippet optimization. Every agency on this list could be worth considering for the right scope. The wrong scope produces the finance site outcome regardless of who executes it.
