Best AI Tools for SEO: The Stack I Actually Use Across 8 Sites

mushfiq sarker
Last updated: June 4, 2026

Last year, I cut my SEO workflow from 12 hours a week to under 4 hours across a portfolio of 8 online businesses. I didn’t hire more VAs. It was switching to the right AI tools for SEO.

Most “Best AI tools for SEO” lists are written by people who don’t manage a portfolio of online businesses. They recommend 25 tools when you need 3 or 4. And they never answer the real question: which ones actually pay for themselves?

I’ve flipped many online businesses since 2008. SEO tools are one of the biggest line items in my operational budget, so I’m ruthless about what stays and what goes. If a tool doesn’t earn its keep within 60 days (through time saved or ranking improvements) I cancel it.

This is the stack I use, what I’ve tested and dropped, and where you should spend (and save) your money, whether you’re growing a single business or managing a portfolio pre flip.

How I Evaluate AI SEO Tools (And Why Most Lists Get It Wrong)

The 3 Metrics That Actually Matter for Business Operators

I don’t care how many features a tool has. I care about three things:

Time saved per month. I convert this to a dollar value at a $35/hr VA rate. If Surfer SEO saves me 6 hours of content optimization across 4 sites, that’s $210 in recovered time against a $119 subscription. Easy math.

Direct ranking impact. Before/after data from real sites. Not “potential” improvements. Actual movement in Google Search Console after implementing a tool’s recommendations.

Cost per site. Most tools charge per project, per seat, or per domain. This matters enormously when you run 5 to 10 sites. Here’s what that looks like in practice:

Tool1 Site/Month5 Sites/Month10 Sites/Month
Surfer SEO$119$119 (same plan)$219 (Scale)
Semrush + AI Visibility$139 + $99/domain$139 (same plan) + $99/domain$299 + $99/domain
Ahrefs$129$129 (Lite)$249 (Standard)
Frase$49$49 (same plan)$129 (Professional)

The per site cost gap widens fast. A tool that’s a bargain for one site can become a drain at portfolio scale.

What I Don’t Care About

Feature count. More features doesn’t mean a better tool. Half the AI SEO tools I’ve tested had impressive feature lists and mediocre execution.

“AI powered” as a marketing badge. If the AI doesn’t improve accuracy or speed compared to manual work, it’s just a label. I’ve watched tools slap “AI” on basic keyword suggestion features that haven’t meaningfully changed since 2019.

Steep learning curves. The whole point of these tools is saving time. If I need a 3 hour onboarding course just to run my first content audit, the tool has already failed.

Pro Tip: I keep a simple spreadsheet tracking tool cost vs. estimated value added per month. Columns: tool name, monthly cost, hours saved, estimated dollar value of time saved, ranking improvements observed. Review it quarterly and cut anything that isn’t pulling its weight.

Best AI Tools for SEO in 2026 (Tested Across My Portfolio)

1. Surfer SEO: Best for Content Optimization at Scale

Surfer SEO

Every article on every site in my portfolio goes through Surfer’s Content Editor before publishing. The tool analyzes the top ranking pages for any keyword and gives your content a real time optimization score based on NLP driven term recommendations, content structure, and word count targets.

Why I use it: The Content Score directly correlates with ranking potential. I’ve tracked this across 200+ articles. Pieces scoring above 75 consistently outperform those below 60 within the same niche and domain authority range.

Real numbers: On a home improvement site I acquired for $22K, I ran Surfer audits on the top 30 pages. After optimizing 12 underperforming articles (average Content Score went from 52 to 78), organic traffic increased 34% in 8 weeks. That traffic lift translated to roughly $1,400/month in additional ad revenue.

Key features worth using:

  • Content Editor (the core product: real time SERP based scoring)
  • Surfer AI (full draft generation, useful for first drafts on informational content)
  • Audit tool (identifies quick win optimizations on existing content)
  • SERP Analyzer (breaks down what top ranking pages have in common)

Pricing: Standard starts at $119/month (monthly billing) or $99/month (annual). The Pro plan at $219/month monthly or $182/month annual includes 50 AI prompts. Worth it if you’re running more than 5 sites.

Verdict: Best all around content optimization tool for business operators. Worth it if you publish 8+ articles per month across your portfolio. For a deeper comparison of AI writing tools, check out our breakdown of AI content writing tools.

2. Semrush (with AI Visibility Toolkit): Best for AI Search Tracking

Semrush

Semrush has been a staple SEO tool for years, but what makes it essential in 2026 is the AI Visibility Toolkit. This is a dedicated layer that tracks how your brand and content appear across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Google AI Overviews, and Google AI Mode.

Why I use it: The AI Visibility Toolkit includes a Brand Performance dashboard that shows how AI platforms talk about your brand. Not just whether you’re mentioned, but the sentiment and narrative around those mentions. For sites I’m prepping to sell, showing AI visibility data alongside organic traffic is becoming a valuation differentiator.

What sets it apart: You’re not just tracking whether ChatGPT mentions your site. You can trace the answer back to the web signals behind it and figure out what to fix. The AI Visibility Toolkit covers six AI platforms: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot, Google AI Overviews, and Google AI Mode. It also scans YouTube, TikTok, and Reddit.

Pricing: SEO Classic starts at $139/month. The AI Visibility Toolkit is an additional $99/month per domain. Semrush One bundles start at $199/month. Annual billing saves about 17%.

The cost gotcha: AI Visibility is priced per domain. If you’re tracking 3 sites, that’s $297/month just for the AI add on on top of your base plan. For portfolio operators, this adds up fast.

Verdict: Best for operators who need a full SEO suite AND want to track AI search visibility. Expensive for single site operators, but increasingly essential for anyone building or selling sites in 2026.

3. Frase: Best for Research and Content Briefs

Frase

Frase analyzes the top Google results for any keyword and generates content briefs that include target terms, questions to answer, suggested headings, and competitor content breakdowns.

Why I use it: Frase’s brief generation saves me 1 to 2 hours per article. I hand briefs directly to writers. They know exactly what to cover, what questions to answer, and what structure to follow, without me doing the research manually.

Standout feature: Frase recently rolled out dual SEO and GEO scoring. The GEO score shows how well your content aligns with what AI platforms (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini) tend to cite. This is forward looking and most competitors don’t have it yet.

Pricing update: Frase restructured its pricing in 2025 and 2026. The old $15/month Solo plan is gone. Current plans start at $49/month (Starter, monthly billing) or $39/month (annual). The Team plan runs $129/month for unlimited articles and 3 seats. Every plan now includes full access to all features. Differences are volume based, not feature gated.

Verdict: Best bang for buck if your main bottleneck is content research and briefing. The GEO scoring puts Frase ahead of most competitors for anyone thinking about AI search visibility on a budget.

4. Ahrefs: Best for Keyword Research and Competitive Analysis

Ahrefs

Ahrefs remains my primary keyword research and backlink analysis tool. The backlink index is still the most comprehensive in the industry, and the keyword database covers 110B+ keywords across 200+ countries.

Why I use it: When evaluating a business to buy, I run Ahrefs’ Content Gap analysis against the top 3 competitors. AI now surfaces in those gaps. If competitors appear in AI Overviews and my target site doesn’t, that’s both a risk and an opportunity I factor into my offer price. For ongoing operations, I use Keywords Explorer daily and the Site Audit tool on every site in the portfolio monthly.

AI additions: Ahrefs launched Brand Radar, which monitors how your brand appears across six AI platforms plus YouTube, TikTok, and Reddit. It’s built on 15 years of search data and a 110B keyword database, which gives the AI features a stronger data foundation than most purpose built AI tools.

Pricing: Starts at $29/month for the Starter plan (limited functionality). The Lite plan at $129/month is the real entry point for serious SEO work. Standard runs $249/month with unlimited Site Explorer and Keywords Explorer searches. Ahrefs Webmaster Tools is free for sites you verify.

Verdict: Still the gold standard for backlink and keyword data. AI features are catching up to Semrush. If you already have Ahrefs and don’t need Semrush’s deeper AI prompt tracking, Brand Radar may be enough. For more on organizing your keyword data, see our keyword clustering tools roundup.

5. ChatGPT and Claude: Best Free AI for SEO Workflows

ChatGPT and Claude

This isn’t a dedicated SEO tool, but general purpose LLMs handle dozens of SEO micro tasks faster than any specialized software.

What I use them for daily:

  • Generating 10 to 15 title tag variations for split testing (prompt: “Generate 10 title tag variations for [keyword] under 60 characters, each with a different angle”)
  • Drafting meta descriptions in bulk
  • Writing FAQ schema markup from a list of questions
  • Grouping 200+ keywords into topical clusters (prompt: “Analyze this keyword list and group into topical clusters based on search intent. Output as a table.”)
  • Summarizing competitor content to identify gaps
  • Rewriting thin content introductions

Pricing: Free tiers available for both ChatGPT and Claude. Plus or Pro plans run approximately $20/month each.

The limitation: No real time SERP data. LLMs can’t tell you search volume, keyword difficulty, or what’s currently ranking. They’re execution tools, not research tools. Pair them with Ahrefs or Semrush for research, then use LLMs to act on that research faster.

Verdict: The single best free (or near free) AI SEO tool available. If you’re not using LLMs for SEO micro tasks, you’re leaving hours on the table every week.

6. Clearscope: Best for High Value Money Pages

Clearscope

Clearscope is an NLP driven content optimization tool, similar to Surfer but with a different approach. The content grading system is consistently rated as one of the most accurate in the industry, and the interface is dead simple for writers to use.

Why I use it selectively: When I’m working on high value money pages (the top 5 to 10 pages driving 60%+ of a site’s revenue), Clearscope’s recommendations are more nuanced than Surfer’s. I don’t run every article through Clearscope. Just the ones where precision matters most.

Pricing: Essentials starts at $129/month. Business runs $399/month with unlimited reports. No free tier, no AI writing features.

Verdict: Overkill for most business operators. Best for operators with sites doing $5K+/month who need surgical precision on money pages. If you’re running a leaner operation, Surfer or Frase will cover 90% of what Clearscope does at a fraction of the price.

7. MarketMuse: Best for Topical Authority Planning

MarketMuse

MarketMuse does something most other tools don’t: it inventories your entire site, models your topical authority compared to competitors, and outputs prioritized topic clusters and content briefs.

Why I use it: Before publishing new content on a recently acquired site, MarketMuse shows me exactly which topics I need to cover to build topical authority and which existing articles to update first. This is critical for the site growth phase of a flip, where you need to be strategic about where you invest content budget.

Pricing: Optimize plan starts at $99/month. Research runs $249/month. Strategy hits $499/month. There’s a limited free tier that’s useful for getting a sense of the tool before committing.

Verdict: Best for operators planning a content strategy for a 6 to 12 month growth period pre flip. Not worth it for quick flips or sites where you’re just optimizing existing content.

Best Free AI Tools for SEO (That Are Actually Useful)

Free doesn’t have to mean useless. Here are the free AI tools I actually keep in my workflow, not ones I tried once and forgot about.

ChatGPT and Claude Free Tiers

Already covered above, but worth emphasizing: the free tiers handle keyword grouping, meta tag drafts, content outlines, FAQ generation, and schema markup generation. The limitation is no real time SERP data. You can’t verify search volume or see what’s currently ranking.

Google Search Console

Free and non negotiable. Every site in your portfolio should have this connected on day one. GSC is the only source of first party performance data from Google: actual impressions, clicks, CTR, and average position for every query and page. In 2026, I’m paying closer attention to which queries trigger AI Overviews, because those queries often show declining CTR even when rankings are stable.

Ahrefs Webmaster Tools (Free)

Ahrefs Webmaster Tools gives you site audit capabilities, backlink overview, and keyword tracking, limited to sites you verify ownership of. This is the first tool I connect when I acquire a new site, before I even log into WordPress. The site audit alone catches technical issues that would take hours to find manually.

Google’s NotebookLM

Underrated pick. NotebookLM lets you upload source material (competitor articles, research papers, product documentation) and ask questions against that corpus. For YMYL niches where factual accuracy matters, this is far more reliable than asking a general LLM to generate content from its training data. I use it to generate research backed content briefs.

Bing Webmaster Tools

Often overlooked, but Bing powers a significant portion of AI search experiences (Copilot, ChatGPT’s browsing feature). Bing Webmaster Tools gives you performance data for Bing search and early visibility into how your content performs in AI adjacent search experiences. Takes 5 minutes to set up.

Warning: Don’t build your entire SEO workflow on free tools. They’re excellent supplements, but the time you “save” on tool costs often gets burned on manual work. I use free tools alongside 2 to 3 paid tools, never instead of them.

Best SEO Tools for AI Mode (Google’s New Search Experience)

If you’re acquiring or growing an online business in 2026, AI Mode visibility is no longer optional. It’s becoming part of due diligence.

Why AI Mode Changes the SEO Tool Equation

Traditional rank trackers show Position 1 to 10. Google AI Mode works differently. It surfaces content as citations within AI generated responses, not as blue links. A site can get meaningful traffic from AI Mode citations even without a traditional top 10 position.

For business operators, this creates a new data point: I’m now including AI Mode citation data in my acquisition reviews. A business whose content gets cited in AI Mode responses for its top 20 keywords is worth more than one that doesn’t, because that visibility is hard to replicate and represents durable organic traffic.

Tools That Track AI Mode Visibility

Semrush AI Visibility Toolkit: The most comprehensive option. Tracks visibility across Google AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Copilot. Starts at $99/month per domain as an add on, or included in Semrush One bundles starting at $199/month.

LocalGlyph: A local SEO platform that tracks AI visibility across Google AI Overview, ChatGPT, and Perplexity. Best suited for businesses with a local component. Free to start, paid plans from $45/month.

Ahrefs Brand Radar: Covers AI Mode plus 5 other AI platforms, along with YouTube, TikTok, and Reddit scanning. Included in standard Ahrefs plans (Lite and above).

Frase GEO Scoring: Not a standalone tracker, but Frase’s content editor now shows a GEO score alongside the traditional SEO score, indicating how well your content aligns with what AI platforms tend to cite.

How to Optimize Content for AI Mode (Tool Assisted Workflow)

  • Identify gaps: Use Semrush or Ahrefs to see which competitors are being cited in AI Mode for your target keywords, and whether your site is absent.
  • Benchmark content: Run your top pages through Frase’s editor and check both the SEO and GEO scores. Low GEO scores indicate content that Google’s traditional algorithm likes but AI platforms may not cite.
  • Optimize for citations: AI Mode tends to cite content with clear entity coverage, structured data, direct answers to specific questions, and authoritative sourcing. Update your top pages accordingly.
  • Track weekly: AI search visibility shifts faster than traditional rankings. Check your Brand Radar or AI Visibility dashboard weekly, not monthly.
Pro Tip: When I evaluate a business for acquisition, I now run the top 20 revenue driving keywords through Semrush’s AI Visibility report. If the business is invisible in AI Mode for its core terms, I factor in $2,000 to $5,000 of content optimization costs into my offer price.

When to Skip the Tools and Hire Experts Instead

The tools above work when YOU have time to execute. But if you’re managing a portfolio, handling acquisitions, and running a business, there’s a point where tools alone aren’t enough. You need people who know what they’re doing.

My rule of thumb: if a business earns $2,000+/month, the ROI on hiring experts usually beats the ROI on another tool subscription. Tools scale your work; experts replace it.

Done For You SEO Options I Recommend

Vettted: A full service SEO marketplace where every freelancer passes a multi step vetting process (less than 5% acceptance rate). What makes Vettted especially relevant right now is their AI SEO/GEO service, which specifically builds your brand’s authority and citation profile across AI platforms, including Google AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity, and others. I use Vettted for link building and AI SEO/GEO work across my portfolio. If you want AI Mode visibility but don’t want to manage the tools yourself, this is the most efficient route.

WebOperators: Done for you website management built specifically for business investors and operators who want to be hands off. The management plan includes 10,000 words of content and 2 backlinks per month, plus SEO strategy, technical fixes, and growth planning. If you’re an investor who wants to own sites without operating them day to day, this is what that looks like.

TheWebsiteFlip SEO Services: Our own service offerings including niche editsguest postsfoundational backlinkstopical maps, and content pruning.

Pro Tip: Tools and services aren’t mutually exclusive. I run Ahrefs and Surfer for research and optimization decisions, then hand execution to Vettted or WebOperators for link building and content production. The tools inform the strategy; the experts execute it.

AI SEO Tools I Tested and Dropped (And Why)

Not everything that looks good on a features page works in practice. Here’s what didn’t make the cut:

Jasper AI: Solid for raw content generation, but weak on SEO optimization. It doesn’t replace Surfer or Frase for actual optimization work. The content output requires heavy editing for YMYL niches, and I found myself spending almost as much time fixing Jasper drafts as I would have spent writing from scratch. Good for social media copy. Not for SEO content.

Writesonic and Chatsonic: The multi LLM approach (access GPT 4, Claude, Gemini from one interface) is impressive on paper. In practice, it felt unfocused. For SEO specific tasks, dedicated tools consistently outperformed it. If you need a general AI writing assistant, it’s fine. For SEO workflows, skip it.

SurgeGraph: Affordable long form content generation, but quality was inconsistent. Fine for low competition informational keywords where you need volume. Not reliable for money pages or competitive terms where content quality makes the ranking difference.

Any “AI SEO tool” without SERP data: This is my biggest red flag. Any tool that generates content without analyzing what’s actually ranking for that keyword is guessing. Surfer, Frase, and Clearscope all pull real SERP data. Tools that don’t are just fancy writing assistants with an SEO sticker on them.

For more on what separates good content from bad, especially when AI is involved in the production process, check out our guide on evaluating content quality for niche sites.

The Bottom Line

The best AI SEO tools are the ones that pay for themselves. Period.

For most business operators, the stack is simpler than the tool vendors want you to believe: one keyword and backlink tool (Ahrefs or Semrush), one content optimization tool (Surfer or Frase), and ChatGPT for everything else. That’s three tools. Total cost: $178 to $269/month depending on your choices.

Don’t over tool. Start with the beginner stack if you’re running 1 to 2 sites. Add Semrush AI Visibility when you need to track AI search presence. Layer in experts from Vettted or WebOperators when your portfolio grows beyond what you can execute alone.

And measure everything. If a tool can’t show you a return within 60 days, cut it and move on. There are too many good options to waste money on ones that don’t deliver.
